A children’s piercing standard built over decades
Tribal Expression has served Calgary for more than two decades. Founder and owner Keith Kennedy has been professionally piercing for nearly 32 years and is one of Canada’s longest-practising professional piercers.
Long before professional needle ear piercing for children became widely accepted, Keith was among the early Canadian professional piercers willing to give children the same professional standards he expected for adults — professional placement, individually sterilized equipment, sterile single-use needles, properly fitted jewellery, honest preparation, and a piercer who listened to the child.
That philosophy became The Tribal Expression Way — and today it continues through a new generation: Iliana Kennedy, apprenticed under her father Keith, and Sergi, one of the studio’s most requested kids piercers.

Iliana says hello to your child — not just to you. She answers every question, kid questions included.

Your child chooses their earrings: implant-grade titanium made right here, with gemstones, shapes and colours to pick from.

Watch your jewellery be sterilized
You watch the jewellery be sterilized before your eyes — nothing goes near your child until it’s completely sterile.

Come to the piercing room
Seated and settled in the calm, private piercing room, comfort item in arm’s reach.

Cleaning and marking
We clean the ear and place tiny dots that mark exactly where the piercing will go. Your child looks in the mirror and approves the marks — nothing happens until they say yes.

Iliana explains how the process goes and sets up the tools. Every step is explained before it happens.

Gentle earlobe hold
A soft clamp gently holds the earlobe. Don’t worry — it isn’t painful, just little helpers that keep everything steady.

A quick pinch with a sterile, single-use professional needle, and the jewellery goes in as part of it. Iliana works with your child’s breathing — it’s done as quick as they even feel it, one ear at a time.

The 6–8 week fit check
Around 6–8 weeks we recommend a jewellery fit check: we look at the ear, the jewellery, the remaining swelling and how healing is progressing — then decide whether a shorter post is appropriate.

Downsize when appropriate
If the ear is ready, we replace the longer starter post with a shorter, properly fitted one — often keeping the same decorative front. Professional downsizing is $20 per ear.

Continue healing
A downsize doesn't mean healing is finished — the piercing keeps healing and strengthening over the following months, with our support the whole way.

What age does Tribal Expression pierce children?
Tribal Expression currently provides its specialized kids ear-piercing service for children age 4 and older, subject to the studio's readiness and consent policies.
How do I know if my child is really ready?
Readiness is about willingness, not just age. A ready child wants the piercing, can say what they're feeling, can sit through the steps, and can help with basic aftercare.
Does ear piercing hurt?
Yes, briefly — most children describe a quick pinch that's over in seconds. What happens around the pinch matters more: our piercers pace everything around your child.
What if my child cries?
That's completely okay. Crying is a normal, healthy response, and our piercers know how to keep a crying child safe, comfortable and dignified — nothing about the process requires a child to be stoic.
Can my child stop if they change their mind?
Yes. Tribal Expression expects children to participate willingly in their ear-piercing experience. If a child tells us they need to stop, that matters.
Does Tribal Expression use piercing guns?
No. Tribal Expression uses professional hollow piercing needles for kids ear piercing, not piercing guns.
