Kids piercing jewellery

Every earring we pierce with is implant-grade titanium, made right here in Calgary by Tribal Expression. Your child chooses from flat backs, gemstones, shapes and anodized colours — sized to their ear by a professional.

Gemstones

Shapes

Hearts, stars, moons and other approved shapes in solid titanium.

Colours

Titanium can be anodized into available colours — a surface-colour process, not a coating.

Flat backs

Flat-back style where applicable: sits snug and comfortable, kind to sleeping and healing.

Post length & fit

Why is the starter post a little longer?

When we pierce your child’s ears, the jewellery is not supposed to fit exactly the same way on day one as it will later. A fresh piercing can swell. For that reason, we intentionally select a post that provides a little additional room during the early healing period.

Depending on your child’s ear, anatomy and jewellery, approximately 1–2 mm of extra post length may be visible. That space is intentional. It gives the ear room for normal swelling without unnecessarily compressing freshly pierced tissue.

Fresh piercings need room for swelling. Once swelling settles, a professional downsize can provide a closer fit with less unnecessary movement.

The longer post is not a mistake.

One of the questions parents sometimes ask us is why their child’s earring suddenly looks too long. In many cases, the answer is simple: the jewellery did not become longer — the swelling went down. The extra room that was important immediately after piercing can become much more noticeable once the ear settles.

  1. 1

Fresh piercing → room for swelling

  2. 2

Swelling settles → more of the post may become visible

  3. 3

Fit check → a piercer evaluates the ear

  4. 4

Downsize → a shorter, properly fitted post — when appropriate

  5. 5

Ongoing healing → the piercing continues strengthening

Why we fit jewellery this way

At Tribal Expression, jewellery fit is part of the piercing process. We do not simply pierce the ear, install an earring and forget about the fit. The jewellery needed by a freshly pierced ear can be different from the jewellery length that becomes appropriate after the initial swelling has settled — so we plan for both stages.

A little extra room protects the fresh piercing during the swelling stage. A properly fitted shorter post can later reduce unnecessary movement and snagging. Both fits have a purpose. The Tribal Expression way is about considering the entire experience — from the moment your child chooses their jewellery, through the piercing, early healing, downsizing and long-term wear.

Piercing is an event.
Healing is a process.

At Tribal Expression, we have spent more than two decades refining how we care for children’s ear piercings. That means thinking beyond the piercing itself. The jewellery needs to accommodate swelling at the beginning. The fit needs to be reassessed as the ear changes. Aftercare needs to evolve as healing progresses. And parents need to know what is normal, what is not, and when to come back and see us. That follow-through is part of the Tribal Expression way.

What is an earring downsize?

Downsizing usually means replacing the original longer jewellery post with a shorter post once the initial swelling has sufficiently settled. It does not necessarily mean changing the decorative front. With the threadless flat-back jewellery we commonly use, the decorative front and the post are separate pieces — so your child can often keep the jewellery design they love while we adjust the post length behind it.

Same beautiful front. Better-fitting post.

How a threadless flat-back earring works

Threadless end

The decorative front your child sees and chooses.

Post

The portion that passes through the piercing. Different post lengths allow the jewellery to be properly fitted throughout different stages of healing.

Flat back

The smooth backing that rests behind the ear.

The ability to separate the decorative front from the post is one reason this jewellery system works so well for professional downsizing. We can often change the length without taking away the jewellery design your child chose.

A closer fit should never mean a tight fit

When we describe the eventual fit as closer or more flush to the ear, we do not mean the jewellery should squeeze the tissue. The goal of downsizing is not compression — the goal is an appropriately fitted post without unnecessary excess length.

Important: downsizing does not mean the piercing is finished healing.

A piercing can be ready for a shorter post while the piercing channel is still healing and strengthening internally. The purpose of downsizing is to adjust the jewellery fit after the original swelling allowance is no longer needed. Healing continues afterward.

  • Initial healingApproximately 6 weeks
  • Common fit reassessment / downsize periodApproximately 6–8 weeks
  • Strengthening periodApproximately 6 weeks to 6 months
  • Long-term stabilityCommonly approximately 6–12 months

Individual healing varies — these are common timeframes, not guarantees.

The 6–8 week fit check

We commonly recommend having your child’s jewellery fit checked at around 6–8 weeks. That does not mean every ear automatically receives a shorter post on a specific date. We look at the ear. We look at the jewellery. We look at the remaining swelling. We look at how the piercing is progressing. Then we determine whether a shorter post is appropriate.

Why don’t we just use the shorter post from the beginning?

Because your child’s ear may swell after it is pierced. The post that may eventually provide a beautiful close fit could be too short during the early swelling period. The first post therefore needs to accommodate the freshly pierced ear — not just the ear we expect to see several weeks later.

The right fit on piercing day is not necessarily the right fit six weeks later.

Why not just keep the longer post?

Once swelling has settled, unnecessary extra length can allow the jewellery to move more than it needs to — and can make it easier to catch on:

A properly fitted shorter post helps reduce excess movement and snagging while the piercing continues healing.

Why does post length matter?

Fresh piercings start with a slightly longer post so the ear has room for normal swelling. Once swelling settles, a professional downsize can fit a shorter one — the right fit at every stage is part of professional care.

What is downsizing?

Downsizing replaces the longer starter post with a shorter, properly fitted post once initial swelling has settled — usually keeping the same decorative front. See our post length & downsizing guide above.
